Elizabeth Hargrave’s chill 2019 birdwatching board game Wingspan has sold more than a million copies and spawned three expansions and two spinoffs. Finspan, which launched in January, takes nature lovers under the sea to observe aquatic life while the 2024 game Wyrmspan appeals to fantasy fans by letting them build a dragon sanctuary. Stonemaier Games is continuing to build on all three titles, with Wyrmspan: Dragon Academy launching through the publisher’s online store on Sept. 10 and expansions for Finspan and Wingspan releasing next year.

Wyrmspan designer Connie Vogelmann and artist Clémentine Campardou team up again for Wyrmpan’s first expansion, which adds a collection of 80 new dragon cards, 25 caves, and five dragon guilds to the base game. The expansion introduces the concept of fledglings, adolescent dragons that require training to reach their full potential. When exploring a cave with a fledgling, you can spend a designated resource to add a training token to the card, unlocking an extra ability when you’ve filled their training bar.

The expansion also changes the game dynamics a bit, awarding players who pass their turn for the round bonus resources. Passing early means your engine isn’t running as efficiently as other players, so this mechanic is meant to help players who have fallen behind catch up. It can also change the math for players who might be able to act but want the resources to set them up for success in the next round.

The first expansion for Finspan and a new Wingspan expansion are currently in pre-production and expected to launch in early 2026. If you can’t wait until then, a set of fan-designed bird packs for Wingspan will be available to order from Stonemaier Games on Oct. 15.
